ELEVATOR REPAIR WORKER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is skilled work at the full performance level in the inspection, maintenance and repair of elevators and related equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of a maintenance supervisor, and involves conditions which can only be partially controlled and light physical effort.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Inspects and repairs manual and semiautomatic elevators; refers, when required, to blueprints and architectural drawings showing layout of elevator and related plant equipment; prepares and submits for approval requisitions for elevator parts and tools.
- Checks by observation contract work performed on automatically-controlled elevator equipment to insure work meets specifications; maintains logs of repairs made and materials used; coordinates with contractor's mechanics the removal of elevators from service in order to maintain optimum operating services.
- Directs work of skilled and unskilled workers temporarily assigned to move heavier pieces of elevator equipment; regulates elevator speed and braking mechanisms; renews broken controls, lighting cables, and sheaves; installs hoist, governor and compensating cables.
- Repairs manual and semiautomatic elevators by adjusting contactors on elevator cage doors; repairs defective electrical locks by disassembling and inspecting them; replaces work or broken parts; reassembles and installs repaired units.
- Tests elevator relays by observing readings on recording and indicating devices; adjusts relays by tightening nuts, tension springs and other parts until readings indicate proper functioning; disassembles relays to replace work or defective parts; cleans moving parts of relay.
- Performs preventive maintenance of elevator equipment by periodically lubricating such equipment as rails, governors and motors.
- Conducts regularly scheduled safety inspections on elevators; follows safety regulations in transferring passengers out of malfunctioning elevators; maintains keys to start and stop elevator operation; stops elevator services when inspection reveals malfunctioning of parts or safety controls; places safety barriers where needed when repair work is in progress; accompanies state officials inspecting elevator equipment.
- Makes repairs and maintains automatically-controlled elevator equipment if required.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in the repair and maintenance of elevators and related equipment.
- the construction, maintenance and operation of manual, semiautomatic and automatically-controlled electrically powered elevators.
- the operation of relay control systems, contactors and similar devices commonly found in automatically-controlled elevator equipment.
- the standard methods, practices, tools and materials of the elevator repairman's trade.
- the laws, ordinances, and generally accepted safety standards relating to the safe operation of all types of elevator equipment.
- basic electrical principles as applied to elevator installation and repair.
ABILITY TO:
- recognize and locate causes of malfunctioning of automatically-controlled elevator equipment, and to recognize possible hazards in elevator equipment operation.
- maintain and repair manual, semiautomatic and automatically-controlled elevator equipment, including relay systems, contactors and similar control devices.
- requisition and specify parts, materials, and tools essential to elevator maintenance.
- read and interpret technical diagrams and blueprints.
- make routine tests on elevators and equipment.
- maintain records and submit oral and written reports pertaining to the work.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 5/1964.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
- Three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of elevators and related equipment, two years of which shall have involved maintaining and repairing automatically-controlled elevator systems.
Or any equivalent combination of training and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
