RECREATION DISTRICT CARETAKER SUPERVISOR II
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is supervisory caretaker and grounds maintenance work directing through
subordinate supervisors the activities of crews involved in the cleaning, caretaking and grounds
maintenance activities in an assigned recreation division. An employee in this class has
responsibility for supervising the custodial and grounds maintenance work for several recreation
districts, and primary responsibility for providing custodial and grounds maintenance services
to assigned buildings and grounds. Work includes giving instructions and directions to a number
of subordinate supervisors, planning daily work assignments, and making frequent trips to work
locations to see that work standards are being met and proper supervision is being taken. The
ability to motivate subordinates to effectively complete their assigned tasks is of major
significance to the work. Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative
superior.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Plans, schedules, trains, and assigns cleaning duties to subordinates; tours work areas to
determine cleaning needs; prepares a list of areas that need work and when crews will be there;
determines the size of crews needed to perform cleaning functions.
- Supervises, through subordinate supervisors, the grass cutting, seeding, and routine
grounds maintenance activities work; confers with subordinate supervisors on any work schedule
changes that may be necessitated because of the condition of the area, work schedule, orders
from superiors, etc.
- Schedules repairs and maintenance at recreation facilities; makes certain necessary
paperwork is completed; makes certain ice rink and pool equipment is in working order.
- Inspects work areas while work is being performed and upon completion of determine
the work quality; points out unacceptable work and re-inspects to see that corrective measures
are taken.
- Meets with community groups, athletic associations, and citizens to identify problems;
discusses requests and complaints that groups and individuals may have regarding maintenance
at the Recreation Department's facilities.
- Conducts training sessions for subordinate supervisory personnel instructing them on
supervisory techniques, safety measures and the use and care of new materials and equipment;
orients new, seasonal and reassigned employees on such topics as departmental policies, work
hours, and chain of command.
- Maintains records and prepares reports relating to personnel, supplies, equipment, and
day-to-day operations.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the modern materials, methods, equipment and practices used in custodial care of major buildings and adjacent grounds.
- the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the care of athletic fields.
- the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in the work.
- supervisory methods and techniques.
ABILITY TO:
- estimate materials and supplies, tools, equipment, personnel, and time needed to complete grounds maintenance and custodial tasks.
- prepare work schedules designed to achieve maximum use and efficiency of work force.
- prepare records and reports pertaining to daily operations.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the community, departmental officials and associates.
- understand and follow written and oral instructions.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 9/83.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
- Five years of experience in the cleaning and care of grounds or buildings, three years of which has been in a supervisory capacity, one year of which has involved supervisory responsibility for the cleaning and care activities of all grounds and buildings in a Recreation District.
Or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Recreation District Caretaker Supervisor II.
