DRAWBRIDGE OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR
GENERAL
DEFINITION
This is supervisory work in the operation and routine
maintenance of electrically activated drawbridges. The employee in this class supervises the
activities of subordinate drawbridge
operators and other subordinate personnel. Work in this class includes assigning, reviewing,
evaluating, and training subordinates, operating and maintaining the drawbridges, and
maintaining records. The employee in this class performs the duties on an assigned shift. Work
is performed under the supervision of a technical superior. Work involves conditions which can
only be partially controlled and involves some light physical activity.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK
(ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Assigns, reviews, and evaluates the activities of a small group of employees in the
operation and routine maintenance of electrically activated drawbridges; instructs subordinates
on techniques and methods used in the operation, maintenance, and cleaning of drawbridges;
prepares payroll reports.
- Listens for signals from boats requesting the opening of the drawbridges; stops land
traffic by depressing the traffic control and safety gate signals; signals and receives signals from
watch attendants during the operation of the bridge; operates machinery to open and close
bridge.
- Maintains a log of bridge openings listing the date, time and purpose of such activities;
prepares reports on drawbridge maintenance and damages.
- Sight inspects bridge mechanism for proper functioning; lubricates gears, motors, gates,
locks and other moving parts; makes first echelon repairs on equipment when necessary; inspect
drawbridge and parts reported as defective; reports necessary repairs to immediate supervisor.
- Turns on pier navigation lights; replaces bulbs as necessary.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS
AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the operation of electrically activated drawbridges.
- the operation of heavy electrical motors and of power driven machinery and equipment
utilized in electrically activated drawbridges.
- the maintenance requirements of electrical drawbridges and motors and their power
driven machinery.
- the rules and regulations controlling the operation of the drawbridges crossing navigable
waters of the State of Pennsylvania.
- the general procedures required for movable bridge safety.
ABILITY TO:
- assign, review and evaluate the work of a small group of employees engaged in
drawbridge maintenance and operation.
- think quickly and clearly in emergency situations.
- maintain records and prepare reports.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING
AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based
on training and experience requirements as approved on 1/86.)
- Education equivalent to the tenth school grade.
- Four years of experience as a drawbridge operator.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable
by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions
required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Drawbridge Operator Supervisor.
