PARK MANAGEMENT TRAINEE
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is work of a training nature developing knowledge and skills in park management. Assignments are limited but of increasing scope and difficulty as an incumbent receives formal training and on the job experience in such park operations as administration, horticulture, arboriculture, grounds maintenance and recreation. As experience is attained an incumbent becomes eligible for promotion to the next level of park manager. Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative superior.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)
- Positions in this class must perform work of a training nature developing knowledge and skills in park management.
- Positions in this class must perform the work in the Fairmount Park Commission.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Receives on the job training in the administrative, horticulture, arboriculture, grounds maintenance and/or recreation divisions on a planned rotating basis.
Gathers and analyzes data, recommends action and prepares reports for administrative superiors.
Reads text books, manuals, instructions, and regulations to develop knowledge, skills and abilities in the park management field.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the principles and practices of park administration
- the principles and practices of horticulture
- the principles and practices of forestry
- the uses and applications of personal computers and current software packages used for word processing, data base manipulation, and preparation of spreadsheets
SKILLS:
- uses and applications of personal computers and current standard software packages used for word processing, data base manipulation and preparation of spreadsheets as required by job assignment.
ABILITY TO:
- analyze facts and exercise sound judgment
- learn techniques of planning, coordinating and supervising park functions
- solve problems with effective solutions.
- present ideas effectively both orally and in writing
- understand and follow oral and written instructions
- learn contract management, city procurement functions, and specification writing
- establish and maintain effective working relationships
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 12/75.)
EDUCATION
Completion of a bachelor's degree program from an accredited college or university with major course work in park administration, horticulture, forestry or landscape architecture.
OR
Completion of a bachelor's degree program including coursework determined by the Personnel Department to be equivalent to the specified coursework.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
