LIBRARY BOOKBINDER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is skilled work at the full performance level in the binding and finishing of library books and related printed matter for library distribution.
Work is performed under the general supervision of a technical superior. Light physical effort is required in an environment with some disagreeable aspects.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Trims edges of books by using cutting or sanding machines; rounds spines of books with a hammer after placing in press or by u sing a manually operated compressor; forms joints with hammer.
- Cuts and pastes flannel across spines of books; measures and cuts boards; measures and cuts cloth or leather covers; turns edges and glues covers to boards; pastes endpapers to boards.
- Finishes books by printing title and call number on spine using hand or machine techniques; may ornament as special needs require.
- Makes cases and book boxes for rare books and documents; cuts and mounts maps, pictures, charts and other printed material.
- Performs general maintenance on machines as needed.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in all aspects of the bookbinding trade.
- the operational hazards and safety precautions involved in all aspects of the bookbinding trade.
- quality and quantity standards of production in all aspects of the bookbinding trade.
SKILL IN:
- the application of library bookbinding methods and techniques.
- the use and care of materials, tools, and equipment used in all aspects of the bookbinding trade.
ABILITY TO:
- maintain and make minor repairs to bookbinding machinery and equipment.
- perform duties requiring manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- make simple arithmetic computations.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 10/1984.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.
- Four years of experience learning the bookbinding and finishing trade as a helper or an apprentice including two years of experience in library bookbinding.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
