General Definition
- This is advanced technical photographic work supervising and participating in the activities of a photographic unit. The employee is responsible for reviewing the work of a squad of photographers to assure the quality of finished products and that prisoners are processed in a timely fashion. Significant to the work is the responsibility for evaluating requests for photographic services from other police units, law enforcement agencies, and determining which are appropriate. Employees in this class work rotating shift work. Work is performed under the supervision of a technical superior.
Typical Examples Of Work (Illustrative Only)
- Supervises a photographic unit that works rotating shifts; assigns subordinate photographers to work related to prisoner processing in cell room, hospital, morgue, graphic workstation, or to do public relations work; assures work flows evenly and that subordinates produce a minimum amount; sets priorities for their assigned shift and makes work assignments accordingly.
- Reviews the work of subordinate photographers; assists in resolving the more difficult technical problems; provides advice and assistance via telephone to police officers photographing crime scenes.
- May assist in performing the photographic duties of the unit when work demands require.
- Maintains files and records of work performed; requisitions materials.
- Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Knowledge Of:
- the principles, materials, and equipment used in taking still photographs.
- the principles, practices, materials, and equipment used in developing, printing, and enlarging still photographs.
- police procedures for processing prisoners.
- the properties and characteristics of digital photography.
- Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, and Publisher (or current equivalent).
- Photoshop
Skill In:
- performing photographic work involving technical aspects of photography.
- the use and care of photographic and related equipment such as cameras, scanners, and printers.
Ability To:
- supervise the work of a group of photographic personnel.
- maintain records and prepare reports.
- testify in court.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and police officials.
- Ability to use Adobe Photoshop 3 or higher, or use photographic programs deemed acceptable by the Police Department.
Minimum Acceptable Training And Experience
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 2/11.)
Education
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade. AND
- A minimum of six (6) credits of coursework which includes basic photography and/or digital photography AND
General Experience
- One year of experience in photographic work involving the taking, developing and enlarging or printing of photographs. AND
Specific Experience
- Two years of full performance level experience in photographic work involving the taking, developing and enlarging or printing of photographs. AND
OR
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources.
Physical And Medical Requirements
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
Licenses, Registrations And/Or Certificates
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Police Photographer Supervisor.
