COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT MECHANIC
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is journeyman level work installing, maintaining and repairing a variety of audio communication and electrical equipment.
Work is performed under the general supervision of a maintenance superior. Work assignments require the application of evaluative thinking and are carried out in accordance with standard trade practices and general work instructions. The employee has controlling responsibility for completing assigned tasks relating to the maintenance and operation of audio communication equipment. Work involves some disagreeable aspects and requires moderate physical effort.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Meets with trade show representatives to discuss the stereo, tape or public address systems to be installed; interprets and constructs blueprints and sketches for complex projects; checks to see if necessary material such as amplifiers, tuners, record and tape player and related switches and relays are available; installs audio equipment by performing the proper internal wiring and external connections.
- Repairs systems which malfunction; checks equipment pieces with alternate systems and meters and tube testers; replaces defective equipment by using small hand tools.
- Requisitions parts and supplies for audio equipment.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the maintenance and repair of a variety of audio communication equipment.
- the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the communication equipment mechanic trade.
- the principles and theory of electricity.
- the operation and use of gas and electric welding equipment and the acetylene torch.
- the use and care of tools and equipment used in the work.
ABILITY TO:
- assign and review the work of a small group of employees engaged in the installation, maintenance and repair of a variety of communication and electrical equipment.
- disassemble, repair, and reassemble a variety of audio communication equipment.
- read and interpret blueprints and sketches.
- use electrical testing devices to locate defects in the operation of audio communication and related equipment.
- estimate time and materials.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 1/1953.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.
- Four years of experience as a helper or apprentice learning the electrical and mechanical maintenance and repair of communication equipment or a variety of electrical equipment.
Or any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to meet approved minimal physical and medical standards.
