STADIUM OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR
GENERAL
DEFINITION
This is stadium management work supervising day to day operations, contract enforcement, field
conversions and maintenance at the municipal stadium complex. The incumbent supervises the provision of
contracted services for prime tenants, promoters and advertisers, negotiates contract terms for prospective users
and assures that contractors and concessionaires provide agreed services. Work may involve physical effort and
exposure to extreme weather conditions. Work is performed under the direction of the Stadium Director/Deputy
Commissioner.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position
to be approved for this class.)
- The employee in this class must supervise, through subordinate trades and technical supervisors, the work
of a large staff, including contracted employees, engaged in maintenance for the interior and exterior of
stadium buildings, grounds and appurtenances, field conversions and the delivery of contracted services
to prime tenants, promoters, and advertisers.
- Only one position will be allocated to this class.
- The position must perform the work in the Recreation Department, Stadium Complex.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK
(ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Plans, assigns and reviews through subordinate trades and technical supervisors the work of a large staff
of technical, trades and laboring personnel engaged in maintenance for the interior and exterior areas of the
stadium buildings and grounds, and sound, video and electronic systems; insures delivery of contracted services
to prime tenants, promoters and advertisers; makes field space available for practices; schedules the operations
of work forces according to the types of events, size of crowd expected, season of year, condition of grounds and
playing surfaces and other variables affecting the need for services at stadium facilities; receives requests for
special services; assigns in-house or contractor personnel according to contract and terms of leases; ascertains
that work conforms to acceptable standards; answers complaints as necessary.
- Meets prospective renters and clients; explains standard lease provisions, services and fees in conjunction
with Stadium Director/Deputy Commissioner; enforces provisions of contracts for services such as cleaning,
security, and emergency repairs by monitoring work performed; inspects cleanliness of concessionaires' facilities;
imposes fines for non-compliance; confers with consultants and contractors regarding projects and contracted
work.
- Tours stadium complex to ascertain the operational efficiency; advises superiors of need for capital
improvements, rehabilitations and restoration projects; provides technical assistance during bid preparation,
construction and inspection/completion phases; confers with subordinate supervisors to monitor progress of repair
or maintenance activities; inspects stadium sound system, televisions, electronic boards, and computer systems;
supervises and assigns stadium carpentry, welding, masonry, plumbing, electrical and painting staff and
contractors to maintain stadium facilities; functions as duty officer every fourth event; supervises duty operations
crew; directs contractors performing ushering and security duty, clean-up, and parking.
- Supervises, through subordinate supervisors, the stadium conversion process; schedules and supervises
the conversion of stadium area surface to/from baseball diamond, football field or concert arena as required;
supervises other aspects of the conversion operation such as field markings and painting; prepares overtime forms
for staff members and departmental laboring and trades crews engaged in the conversion operation; determines
resources needed and how resources are to be utilized regarding playing field conversion.
- Investigates complaints made by the public; rectifies the problem or makes appropriate referrals; responds
to complainant by letter or phone; interacts with tenants on maintenance and operations issues; directs and
supervises, through subordinates, water removal from fields, field protection from weather elements and snow
and ice removal from parking lots, sidewalks, walkways, seating areas and playing fields when necessary.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS
AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the appurtenances of various types of sports, special shows, and activities or events which are presented
in stadium facilities.
- the methods, techniques, material and equipment used in maintaining and converting the playing fields.
- the legal and public procurement requirements involved in contract negotiation and administration as applied to shows, exhibits, athletic events and other large scale productions at facilities leased to private
enterprises.
- supervisory methods and techniques.
- the principles and practices of stadium operations as they relate to the preparation and care of stadium
facilities.
- the functions of various departments and agencies in the city as they apply to stadium operations.
- the methods, techniques and equipment used in general groundskeeping.
- the methods and techniques of building maintenance.
- setting up, operating and maintaining specialized equipment used in spectator events such as lighting,
sound systems, telescopic stands and scoreboards.
ABILITY TO:
- coordinate personnel and resources to maximize operational effectiveness.
- plan and direct the maintenance of the stadium's sound system, televisions, electronic boards, and
computer systems.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with prime tenants, concessionaires, event sponsors,
contractors, representatives of governmental agencies, departmental officials and the public.
- read and interpret blueprints.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING
AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum
training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications
submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved
on 12/97.)
EDUCATION
- Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE
- Four years of experience at the full performance level in one of the recognized building trades at a major
stadium or arena.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE
- Three years of supervisory experience in one of the recognized building trades at a major stadium or
arena.
OR
GENERAL EXPERIENCE
- Four years of facilities maintenance experience in a major arena or stadium.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE
- Three years of experience supervising maintenance trades personnel in the preparation and conversion
of the stadium or arena for a wide variety of athletic and entertainment events.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel
Department that has included the specific experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
