RIGGER STEEPLEJACK
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is skilled lead and full performance level work in rigging and performing
maintenance and repair work at unusual and dangerous heights. An employee in this class both
oversees the activities of other full performance rigger-steeplejacks, trades helpers and laborers,
and participates in the work. Work is performed under the supervision of a maintenance
supervisor.
Work involves conditions which can be only partially controlled, and requires strenuous physical effort.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Oversees the work of other rigger-steeplejacks, trades workers and laborers performing tasks as described below.
- Erects and dismantles scaffolding, swings, staging, and other rigging for repair and maintenance work on municipal buildings and other structures.
- Using scrapers and wire brushes to prepare surfaces, such as flagpoles, radio towers and the City Hall tower, for painting; applies paint; removes and replaces corroded bolts or plates, using burners and welders; with brushes and scrapers, cleans roofs, gutters and ledges.
- Moves heavy, bulky equipment such as furniture and machinery, when the use of rigging is required.
- Fabricates and welds plates, angles and other metal shapes.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the methods, practices, tools, and materials of the steeplejack and rigger trades.
- the occupational hazards and safety precautions of steeplejack and rigging work.
SKILL IN:
- erecting and using swings, block and tackle, boatswain's chairs, chain hoists, scaffolds, and slings.
- performing various kinds of repair and maintenance work.
ABILITY TO:
- climb and work in high places.
- detect unsafe cables, lines, pulleys and related equipment.
- oversee the work of rigger-steeplejacks, trades workers and laborers.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 9/87.)
EDUCATION:
- Completion of the eighth school grade.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
- Four years of experience learning the rigger-steeplejack trade as an apprentice or helper.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
- One year of experience at the full performance level.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to and during tenure of employment as a Rigger-Steeplejack if required by work assignment.
