RIGGER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is skilled limited performance work in rigging and performing maintenance and repair work under unusual conditions and at dangerous heights. Work is performed under the supervision of a technical supervisor, involves conditions which can by only partially controlled, and requires strenuous physical effort.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Erects and dismantles scaffolding, swings, staging, and other rigging for repair and maintenance work on municipal buildings and other structures.
- Uses scrapers and wire brushes to prepare surfaces, such as radio towers and the City Hall tower, for painting; applies paint; removes and replaces corroded bolts or plates, using burners and welders; with brushes and scrapers, cleans roofs, gutters and ledges.
- Moves heavy, bulky equipment such as furniture and machinery, when the use of rigging is required.
- Receives training in and develops proficiency in the use of boatswain's chair and other equipment and techniques in the climbing and maintenance of flagpoles.
- Fabricates and welds plates, angles and other metal shapes.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the methods, practices, tools, and materials of the steeplejack and rigger trades.
- the occupational hazards and safety precautions of steeplejack and rigging work.
SKILL IN:
- erecting and using swings, block and tackle, chain hoists, scaffolds, and slings.
- performing various kinds of repair and maintenance work.
ABILITY TO:
- climb and work in high places.
- detect unsafe cables, lines, pulleys and related equipment.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- learn the equipment, practices and procedures used in the climbing and maintenance of flagpoles.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 9/87.)
- Completion of the eighth school grade.
- Three years of experience learning the rigger-steeplejack trade as an apprentice or helper.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined acceptable by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Rigger if required by work assignment.
