AUTOMOTIVE DRIVER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is routine work operating a motor vehicle to transport passengers, mail or materials to
specified destinations.
Work is performed under the close supervision of an automotive dispatcher or administrative
supervisor. Assignments are stable in nature and are carried out in accordance with detailed instructions.
An employee in this class is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of an automobile, panel truck
or other small vehicle. Work involves some disagreeable aspects and light physical effort.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Operates a station wagon or ambulance to transport patients to and from various City institutions;
operates a car to transport City officials and personnel to a variety of destinations.
- Drives an automobile or truck to pick up and deliver mail and messages, including intra and interdepartmental correspondence; delivers pay checks to departmental installations.
- Tends gates to parking lots for impounded vehicles; drives vehicles within lot to maximize space;
drives impounded vehicles to gate and releases to authorized persons.
- Delivers supplies to City and County offices and institutions, and receives receipts for same;
returns receipts to warehouse for filing; loads and unloads materials from vehicles.
- Collects, sorts and distributes intra and inter-departmental mail and packages.
- Collects samples from public health centers, construction sites or water taps for scientific analysis.
- Completes forms detailing destinations visited or mileage traveled.
- Performs first line maintenance, such as, checking oil and batteries and changing tires on
vehicles.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the geography of the City.
- the traffic laws of the City of Philadelphia and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
- automotive equipment and the techniques and methods used in servicing and effecting minor
repairs to such equipment.
SKILL IN:
- the operation of motor vehicles having either automatic or manual gear shift.
ABILITY TO:
- operate a vehicle safely and efficiently.
- perform light manual tasks if required by work assignment.
- make minor repairs to motor vehicles.
- carry out written and oral instructions.
- maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the
minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.
Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience
requirements as approved on 6/76.)
EDUCATION
- Equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE
- One year of experience in the operation of an automobile.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the
Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as an Automotive Driver.
