INTERCEPTOR SERVICES WORKER 1

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

          This is semi-skilled and manual work assisting in equipment maintenance, and repair and cleaning of wastewater interceptor control chambers, syphon valve chambers, wet wells, attached sewer lines, and related control devices.  An employee in this class performs a variety of generally repetitive duties involving physical exertion and manipulative ability in the use of hand tools or the operation of power equipment both above the ground and in the interceptor chambers, syphon valve chambers, wet wells, sewers, and related structures.  Employees in this class work under the close supervision of a higher level Interceptor Services Worker or labor or trades supervisor.  Work involves very disagreeable conditions, unpredictable hazards, and strenuous physical effort.  

 

ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)

 

1.       Employees in this class perform semi-skilled and manual work assisting in equipment maintenance, and repair and cleaning of wastewater interceptor control chambers, syphon valve chambers, wet wells, attached sewer lines, and related control devices. 

2.       Employees in this class work under the close supervision of a higher level Interceptor Services Worker or labor or trades supervisor. 

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

          Performs inspection, maintenance and minor repairs to wastewater control chambers and related devices.

          Places warning flags, cones, and barriers around open manholes to protect work site. 

          Uses approved air testing equipment to detect the presence of explosive and/or toxic gases, or for sufficient oxygen in chambers, sewers and wet wells; removes manhole covers and allows chamber to ventilate; inserts portable blower into interceptor chamber to dissipate dangerous gases; uses air masks, breathing packs, harnesses and other safety equipment when preparing to enter chamber; follows confined space entry procedures.

          Enters interceptor chambers, syphon valve chambers, wet wells and the attached sewers under the direction of a supervisor; assists in the performance of maintenance and repairs; removes debris, greases fittings, and lubricates control devices.

          Uses hand tools and power equipment to make repairs such as replacing broken chains, adjusting tide gates and breaking up large items blocking wastewater flow; assists in the use of manual, hydraulic, and mechanically operated sewer and wet well cleaning equipment. 

          Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

•         the methods and equipment used in wastewater control device maintenance and cleaning

•         the hazards involved and safety measures employed in performing interceptor or well maintenance

 

ABILITY TO:

 

•         assist in inspections of interceptor chambers and pumping stations

•         use hand and power tools employed in making minor repairs to interceptor regulators and related appurtenances

•         understand and follow oral and written instructions

•         perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in confined and water filled chambers

•         enter openings no larger than thirty inches in diameter

•         ability to read and write English

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE  (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 1/23.)

 

 

OPTION 1:

 

EDUCATION:

 

          Ability to read and write English.

 

AND

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:

 

          One year of experience in general laboring operations.

 

AND

SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:

 

          Six months experience in maintenance, repair and cleaning of sewers, storm water inlets or wastewater interceptor control chambers and devices. 

 

OR

 

OPTION 2:

 

EDUCATION:

 

          Completion of education equivalent to the twelfth school grade.

 

AND

 

EXPERIENCE:

 

          Completion of a CTE or technical school program in pipefitting or steam fitting.

 

OR

 

          Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

          Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

 

          Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of appointment as an Interceptor Services Worker 1.
