EMERGENCY-WATER DISTRIBUTION DISPATCHER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is message dispatching work at the full performance level. An employee in this
class receives, interprets and relays water emergency information to repair crews pertaining to
breaks in water mains and appurtenances. Work is performed on a rotating shift basis. The
employee routes information to emergency field distribution repair crews for action. Work is
performed under the supervision of the technical supervisor.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Receives phone reports concerning water main breaks, flooded cellars, and other
irregularities within the water and other pertinent details; locates trouble spot on city maps;
utilizes municipal radio services to contact the geographically appropriate repair crew.
- Supplies additional information to crew by obtaining and interpreting blueprints, plans
and plats of the affected area; reads plats and maps to repair crews to inform them of valve
location and size of the water main; contacts underground utility location service for information
needed before digging and informs repair crews of the location of underground telephone, gas,
and other utility lines or closely allied underground structures.
- Contacts various utilities to notify them of water main breaks.
- Prepares complaint records and logs, detailing the nature and kind of messages.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
ABILITY TO:
- learn the location and physical layout of city streets.
- think clearly and act quickly in receiving and transmitting calls and messages of an
emergency nature.
- learn to read and interpret plans, plates, and blueprints of the water distribution system.
- speak clearly and distinctly.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- learn during the probationary period, the normal and emergency procedures governing
the operation and maintenance of the water distribution system.
- maintain simple clerical records.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based
on training and experience requirements as approved on 5/60.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
- One year of clerical experience which has involved receiving and disseminating
information to the general public on a full-time basis.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable
by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
