METER READING SUPERVISOR I
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is field work supervising water meter readers in an assigned district on an assigned
shift. Work includes assigning meter reading routes in private homes and commercial or
industrial buildings to individual meter readers and checking the work of meter readers in the
field. Employees supervise curb box reinspections, special re-readings, and settlement readings.
Work is performed under the close supervision of a higher level meter reading supervisor.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Performs work in the required uniform with proper identification.
- Assigns work locations to a group of employees engaged in reading meters in private
homes and commercial or industrial buildings; distributes electronic hand-held meter reading
equipment to meter readers; trains new employees in the techniques of reading meters; resolves
problems arising from meter readings; spot checks individual meter readers in the field;
transports meter readers to and from work locations; may read meters for special accounts,
settlements, or upon special request.
- Reviews electronic meter reading reports of the previous day and investigates any
inconsistencies or peculiar notations; investigates and resolves customer complaints and reports
findings; notifies proper authorities of unauthorized water service turn-ons, and obstructed,
defective or missing meters, or other irregularities; checks water pipes for leaks using sound
equipment.
- Services, or supervises the servicing of, special accounts such as government agencies,
public utilities, or special accounts such as large business firms which use water as a principal
source of raw material in their manufacturing processes and which may also have sewer meters.
- Operates sump pump to remove water from flooded pits to allow meter to be read.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the capabilities, features and requirements of electronic hand-held mater reading
equipment.
- the problems, methods and techniques encountered in a large scale meter reading
operation.
- the care and maintenance of electronic hand-held meter reading equipment.
- the types of hazards associated with reading meters.
- supervisory methods and techniques.
- the functioning of water meters.
ABILITY TO:
- exercise good judgement, courtesy and tact when dealing with the public.
- learn the geography and street locations of the city.
- make varied arithmetic computations rapidly and accurately.
- maintain accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports.
- learn to perform tests on the digital meter reading equipment.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based
on training and experience requirements as approved on 10/88.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
One year of field experience reading gas, water or electric meters in a public utility.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable
by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Meter Reading Supervisor I.
