POLICE STAFF INSPECTOR


GENERAL DEFINITION

Employees in this class shall perform duties at the Police Commissioner or his designee's discretion. These employees are part of the Command Staff and a significant aspect of their assignment includes responsibility for work within the area of police operations. Employees may be assigned to command units and divisions. Their work shall be general and the Police Commissioner or his designee has the ability to place them anywhere within the Police Department. Employees may be assigned to investigations and given work for the Police Commissioner or his designee for the purpose of reporting on the efficiency, effectiveness and/or integrity of police divisional, unit, district, etc. operations. Work assignments require analytical thinking and are performed with considerable independence within the framework of the departmental rules and regulations. The use of seasoned judgement and specialized knowledge and skill are required in investigating, managing and appraising the efficiency, effectiveness and/or integrity of police divisional, unit, district, etc. operations. Employee work includes, but is not limited to, transmitting orders to ranking police officers and police personnel when changes in operational procedures are determined to be necessary, or when information indicates there is lax discipline or breaches of integrity.

Employees may be assigned to the inspection of divisions, units, districts, etc. under the command of the Police Commissioner or his designee. Employees in this class shall have general patrol supervision responsibilities. Supervision is received through conferences, meetings to review work, evaluation of reports and observation of work results obtained.
