POLICE CAPTAIN


GENERAL DEFINITION

This is responsible, supervisory police work commanding a police district or directing the work of a specialized police unit. Employees are responsible for planning and directing police activities in a designated geographic area or of a specialized police unit. Employees in this class are responsible for the caliber of police service given by his command. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures, but much latitude exists for individual judgment and discretion. The use of seasoned judgment and specialized knowledges and skills are required in appraising the effectiveness of police investigation techniques and interpreting departmental policies and rules. Work is reviewed through reviews of reports, discussions, and observations of results obtained.
