AREA YOUTH WORKER SUPERVISOR I
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is gang control work supervising a small group of area youth workers engaged in
the prevention and control of juvenile delinquency by providing direct and intensive service to
juvenile groups viewed as hostile and aggressive. Contacts with juveniles, their families, and
various welfare and law enforcement agencies require a significant degree of understanding of
the motivation of the individual.
Work is performed under the direction of a technical superior. Assignments require
evaluative thinking and are carried out in accordance with accepted area youth work standards
and applicable regulations. The employee participates with others in providing an Area Youth
Work Program. Duties require irregular hours of work, including work on evenings and
weekends, and involve regular exposure to unpredictable conditions.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

Supervises area youth workers; reviews their written reports to ascertain how they are
progressing with gangs; discusses gang and individual case problems with subordinates; instructs
subordinates how to handle specific case and gang control problems; discusses extreme problems
with supervisors.
- Tours neighborhood areas where gang activity is manifest; ascertains whether gang
conflict; notifies law enforcement authorities when conflicts cannot be averted.
- Confers with representatives of welfare, law enforcement and community resource
officials to develop youth programs to increase socially acceptable behavior; meets with
neighborhood organizations to explain gang control program and to elicit their support.
- Attends periodic staff conference; prepares reports on gang activities; corresponds with
interested social agencies.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the principles, practice and techniques of area youth work.
- the functions and resources of public and private social service and related agencies.
- the social factors involved in and causes of social maladjustment.
- the behavior problems encountered in gang members and the methods and practices of
gang members and the methods and practices of gang relationships.
ABILITY TO:
- supervise a small group of area youth workers.
- instruct and provide positive social direction to groups of juveniles.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials of community
resource organizations, associates and gang members.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based
on training and experience as approved on 11/68.)
EDUCATION
- Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university.
EXPERIENCE
- Four years of gang control experience with hostile and aggressive juvenile groups
developing positive and desirable social objectives for the group and individual members, two
years of which were at the full performance level.
Or any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience which has included
the completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university as an
educational minimum.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
