General Specialty
- Provides a variety of facilitating services throughout the City's health centers and older
adult centers.
- Assists in the various clinic areas of health centers; weighs patients and performs urine
dipstick tests prior to the examination; instructs patients to undress; remains present during the
examination; assists the physician by handing him/her the necessary supplies and instruments;
stocks and cleans examination rooms as needed.
- Collects blood using fingerstick method for lab analysis; centrifuges blood and urine
samples as instructed; readies specimens for transfer to the lab.
- Makes home visits as assigned to patients who have missed an appointment or have
received abnormal test results necessitating additional medical treatment; attempts to discern
reason for the missed appointment; leaves another appointment date with the patient.
- Assist in various areas of the older adult centers; registers senior citizens; informs new
members of activities and services available at the center; periodically calls or visits homes of
members who do not participate regularly in program activities; shows movies to patients or
clients as part of the center's program.
- Provides assistance to members engaged in games or arts and crafts activities; leads
group discussions and assists in group activities; supervises special activities such as a band or
dance group; plans picnics and other outings for members; may plan special events such as
Christmas and birthday parties; serves food and distributes utensils to members during
mealtimes.
- Visits selected residential areas to distribute Childhood Lead Prevention Program
literature; explains the danger of lead consumption and the importance of lead testing; performs
door-to-door screening and collecting blood samples of children using the fingerstick method;
collects blood samples as part of large screening tests at day care centers; performs follow-up
tests on children suspected of having elevated blood lead levels.
- Makes transportation arrangements for patients or personally escorts them to the centers.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- current public health programs and services.
- current problems of and programs for the elderly.
ABILITY TO:
- learn to take blood samples using the fingerstick method.
- learn to operate audio visual equipment.
- learn the operation of a centrifuge.
- organize and/or supervise group activities.
- record information according to standard formats.
- establish and maintain effective working relations with associates, clients, community
groups, and follow verbal instructions.
- speak, read and write in a specified non-English language and in English fluently for the
Bilingual specialty.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Both Specialties
EDUCATION
- Education equivalent to completion of the tenth school grade.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE
- Six months of experience in a health care, senior citizen, or day care facility.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable
by the Personnel Department.
Bilingual Specialty
- Sufficient training and/or experience to be able to understand and speak fluently and
clearly in English and a designated non-English language.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this
class.
