RECREATIONAL THERAPY SUPERVISOR
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is administrative and supervisory work directing a therapeutic recreation program
for a large nursing home facility. The employee in this class is responsible for establishing
recreation service program policies and procedures. Duties involve supervision of a staff of
therapists and aids. Work is performed under the general direction of a nursing home
administrator.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Develops policies and procedures for the recreational therapy program in conjunction
with state regulations; makes modifications as needed; sets goals and objectives for the overall
program; evaluates on-going programs in terms of effectiveness, making necessary changes
accordingly; assesses the nursing home's need for additional programs and develops such.
- Reviews records of and becomes acquainted with newly admitted patients in order to
assess their needs and abilities as related to recreational activities; attends patient care plan
conferences with staff members from various departments of the nursing home for the purpose
of maximizing the effectiveness of total patient care collectively.
- Reviews and approves the schedule for recreational activities prepared by the program's
therapists; reviews the list of individuals selected for field trips; visits and observes the various
activities noting patient participation and staff involvement; reviews periodic activity reports
prepared by the staff.
- Determines what equipment and vehicles are needed for the program; requisitions needed
supplies; prepares requests for any purchases which must be made; contacts vendors for any
maintenance required.
- Prepares periodic reports of programmatic activities.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the principles, techniques and equipment applicable to a recreational program in a
nursing home.
- the principles used in the development, revision and direction of a therapeutic recreation
program.
- the principles and practices of therapeutic recreation.
- therapeutic recreational activities appropriate for patients of a nursing home.
- the theories of gerontology and the appropriate application of those theories.
ABILITY TO:
- establish sound goals and objectives for a therapeutic recreation program.
- supervise a staff of recreational employees.
- establish effective relationships with subordinates and other departmental staff members.
- present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based
on training and experience requirements as approved on 6/85.)
EDUCATION
- Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university.
EXPERIENCE
- Three years of experience in therapeutic recreation, two years of which have been at the
full performance level in a skilled nursing home.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable
by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
