This is specialized recreational work planning, arranging, and scheduling a variety of
therapeutic recreational activities for a nursing home, a facility exclusively serving the mentally
and/or physically impaired, or an adult residential care facility population. Work involves
establishing individualized goals for clients and directing the activities of a small number of aides
and volunteers engaged in assisting clients or residents in the planned activities. Work is
performed under the direction of a technical or administrative superior.
Special Services Specialty
- Screens prospective clients interested in participation in special recreational programs;
recommends rejection of clients who have disabilities too severe to allow for adequate
participation in recreational activities, or who may present a danger to other clients or be a
disruptive influence.
- Coordinates with private management of restaurants, theaters and other locations the
necessary access arrangements for recreational outings for disabled persons.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the principles, techniques and equipment applicable to a social and therapeutic recreation
a program for a nursing home or residential care facility population, for the Geriatric
specialty.
- methods, techniques and practices necessary to providing recreation activities for the
mentally and/or physically impaired, for the Special Services Specialty.
- gerontology and geriatric fields, for the Geriatric Specialty.
- community organizations and resources for recreation and social rehabilitation.
ABILITY TO:
- exercise sound judgment in selecting social and/or recreational activities for clients.
- train subordinate recreational staff in methods, techniques and practices necessary to
providing recreation activities for the mentally and/or physically impaired, for the Special
Services Specialty.
- explain the objectives of the program of social rehabilitation to volunteer workers and
to coordinate their work.
- observe client behavior and report on it accurately both orally and in writing.
- supervise a small staff of workers in carrying out planned activities.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, volunteer workers,
and associates.
- learn to operate audio and video equipment.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based
on training and experience requirements as approved on 7/89.)
- Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university with
major course work in therapeutic recreation, recreation or a related field.
For The Geriatric Specialty
- One year of experience conducting social and recreational activities in a hospital, nursing
home or rehabilitation facility.
For The Special Services Specialty
- One year of experience conducting social and recreational activities in a facility providing
service to the physically and/or mentally impaired.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable
by the Personnel Department which has included completion of a bachelor's degree program as
an educational minimum.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this
class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation prior to and during tenure as a Recreational Therapist, if required by work assignment.
