The employee disseminates information about health services and health hazards and their prevention, takes samples to be tested for lead content and compiles data on the incidence of health hazards in the community.  Contact with individual residents and small community groups is a significant feature of the work.  Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative superior.

Bilingual Specialty

• Performs the duties below with members of a non-English language-speaking community.

• Makes educational presentations on a variety of health concerns; assists with the development and dissemination of health educational material; assists with the organization, advertisement, and management of heath outreach and screening events; assesses homes for environmental hazards; conducts environmental sample collection in homes; performs early intervention evaluation and other screening for developmental delays in children.
• Collects blood using fingerstick method for lab analysis; centrifuges blood and urine samples as instructed; readies specimens for transfer to the lab.
• Visits selected residential areas to distribute Childhood Lead Prevention Program literature; explains the danger of lead consumption and the importance of lead testing; performs door-to-door screening and collecting blood samples of children using the fingerstick method; collects blood samples as part of large screening tests at day care centers; performs follow-up tests on children suspected of having elevated blood lead levels. Screens lab reports of lead content tests to determine children needing follow-up testing or continuing medical treatment.
• Makes home visits as assigned to patients who have missed an appointment or have received abnormal test results necessitating additional medical treatment; attempts to discern reason for the missed appointment; leaves another appointment date with the patient.
• Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Both Specialties

EDUCATION

• Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

• Two years of community health work experience.

Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department, which has included the specific experience.

Bilingual Specialty

• Sufficient training and/or experience to be able to understand and speak fluently and clearly in English and a designated non-English language.

• Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
