GENERAL DEFINITION

This is paraprofessional medical work in the care and treatment of patients. Employees in this class extend the services of physicians by performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the areas of primary health care or STD control. Work includes responsibility for taking medical histories and performing examinations to evaluate the physical, mental, emotional and developmental status of patients, making referrals to appropriate physicians and medical specialists, and providing patient education and counseling. Employees provide consultative services to staff regarding STD diagnosis and treatment policies as assignment dictates. Maintaining records of all medical activities and keeping abreast of trends and developments within the assigned medical specialty are significant aspects of the work. Work is performed under the administrative supervision of an administrative superior and the technical supervision of a licensed physician.
