RADIOGRAPHER

 

 GENERAL DEFINITION

 

          This is technical radiology work at the full performance level providing diagnostic x-ray services at the district health centers. An employee in this class reviews requests for radiographs and operates computer related equipment to produce patient diagnosis. Work includes screening patients for x-rays and positioning patient for proper exposure. An employee in this class develops images. Contact with patients, physicians and outside institutions regarding requests for x-rays and/or transfer of images is a significant aspect of the work. Work is performed under the general supervision of a technical superior and involves moderate physical effort and potential hazards.

 

ALLOCATING FACTORS:   (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)

                                               

·       Employees must review requests for x-rays and operate radiological equipment to produce quality radiographs

·       Employees must complete and process digital images on computer related equipment.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

          Reviews requests for x-rays; determines the type of study and number of films needed to complete study; screens patient for x-rays; explains to patient the procedure for x-rays to minimize exposure to radiation; records patient name, address and type of x-ray requested.

          Operates radiological equipment to produce patient x-rays; positions patient for proper exposure; adjusts equipment controls for optimum view; measures patient anatomy; may utilize immobilization devices such as compression bands for pediatric patients.

          Processes and manipulates images utilizing an automatic picture archiving communication system (PACS) to develop exposed images to insure proper contrast and density; forwards images via PACS to requesting physician or radiologist for review.

          Maintains radiological equipment and supplies; cleans equipment and monitors Computer Radiologic (CR) and Digital Radiologic (DR) equipment; runs tests on a daily basis to ensure proper functioning of equipment; may diagnose equipment malfunction; performs minor repair work as necessary, contacts technical support line for assistance as needed.

          Prepares schedules for x-ray appointments in accordance with physician requests; obtains previous films from other health centers or hospitals if available; sends letters to patients informing them of their x-ray appointments; makes follow-up calls to confirm appointments; reschedules appointments if necessary; enters information into patient medical records; enters billing requests into patient files.

          Completes patient and health insurance encounter forms; maintains log of x-ray services provided; prepares monthly reports which indicate the type and number of x-rays taken; maintains radiologic equipment and supplies; makes recommendations to supervisor regarding inventory and supply needs; prepares monthly reports which indicate the number of x-rays taken and patients seen.

          Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

·       the principles, practices and procedures involved in radiology work

·       principles, practices, materials, and equipment used in diagnostic radiological procedures, including positioning patients, adjusting and operating equipment, and processing films

·       the materials and supplies used in radiology work

·       the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in radiology work

·       the human anatomy as it relates to anatomical postures

·       computer applications/ related to digital imaging

·       medical insurance allowances

·       standards of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists

·       principles and processes for providing customer and personal services including customer needs assessment and meeting quality standards for services

 

SKILL IN:

 

·       operating and maintaining radiological equipment

·       developing and manipulating digital images

 

ABILITY TO:

 

·       review requests for x-rays and determine the type of study and number of films needed to complete study

·       perform quality control testing to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations

·       screen patient for x-rays and explain to patient the procedure for x-rays

·       position patient for proper exposure

·       prepare and maintain x-ray records and reports

·       understand and follow oral and written instructions

·       establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, associates and the public

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 7/07.)

 

EDUCATION:

 

          Completion of an approved two-year course in radiology.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

          Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

 

          Possession of certification in Radiography from the American Registry of Radiologic Technology prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Radiographer.
