CITY PLANNER TRAINEE
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is training level planning work. Employees in this class perform assignments of limited scope and
complexity which, along with other training, are designed to develop the knowledges and skills of the planner.
Work is performed under the supervision of a higher level city planner. Assignments are stable in nature and
are performed in accordance with instructions and established routines. The results of completed assignments form
important segments of projects being undertaken by commission task forces.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Prepares outlines of procedures to be followed in the conduct of studies of limited scope and complexity designed
to develop information required for broader studies and activities; gathers and compiles data from a variety of sources
including field interviews; analyzes and verifies data; prepares drafts of reports embodying both written and graphic
material.
- Compiles source material from maps and field visits; prepares preliminary original plans for portions of
redevelopment and area plans which include both written and graphic material; develops detained drawings from rough
drawings and sketches; performs a variety of specialized drafting assignments; prepares perspective sketches of design
features for illustrative purposes; obtains relevant information necessary to respond to oral or written requests for
information from community groups.
- Compiles and tabulates basic data concerning zoning changes, subdivision proposals, sale of City real estate, or
revisions to the City plan; conducts field inspections to collect data for zoning remapping studies.
- Inspects potential parking sites; gathers information for the preparation of cost estimates, parking lot feasibility
and curb studies; prepares plot plans and drawings of potential sites; assists in planning parking facilities, making title
searches and preparing necessary documents and forms; inspects existing lots to facilitate maintenance; contacts various
agencies and officials as part of parking lot development and planning procedures.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:

- the use of standard drafting equipment if required by work assignment.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates
for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 10/73.)
- Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university in a field related to city
planning.
Or any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to meet the physical and medical standards approved for this class.
