ARCHITECTURAL TECHNICIAN II
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is architectural technician work at the full performance level applying established
architectural principles, practices and mathematical knowledges to the completion of assigned
projects in support of architectural activities. Employees work with more independence than
lower level technicians in completing architectural projects such as detailing, preparing
standardized specifications, rendering drawings, plates and plans and completing related
architectural assignments.
Work is performed under the general supervision of a technical superior. Employees in
this class participate with architectural and engineering personnel in the completion of assigned
projects.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Performs field and office technical assignments for the architectural phases of design,
construction or maintenance projects; prepares layouts, charts, diagrams, general purpose maps,
specifications and other technical data; makes mathematical computations to determine size and
space requirements for architectural projects; prepares scale and full sized drawings and other
contract documents integrating structural, mechanical and ornamental elements into a unified
plan; revises existing drawings to incorporate structural and/or mechanical modifications;
prepares graphic representations of works in progress emphasizing particular features of the
project.
- Reviews plans submitted by architectural consultants for accuracy and compatibility with
existing plans and makes necessary computations to show exact dimensions, location and other
information; meets with consultants to resolve drafting problems.
- Reviews specifications, plans, correction sheets and other technical correspondence for
conformance to department, city, state and federal standards and regulations; revises correspon-
dence to reflect changes and modifications.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- mathematics as it applies to drafting and the preparation of cost estimates, specifications,
plans and diagrams in architecture.
- the principles, practices, techniques and instruments of drafting.
- the principles and practices of engineering as they relate to architecture.
- the strengths and uses of construction material.
SKILL IN:
- drawing architectural plans.
ABILITY TO:
- read and interpret architectural and engineering plans and specifications.
- gather, compile and analyze data pertaining to architectural investigations.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, associates and
others.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based
on training and experience requirements as approved on 6/85.)
- Completion of a two year program at an accredited technical institute, junior college,
college or university with major course work in architectural technology.
- One year of architectural technician experience.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable
by the Personnel Department that has included completion of the twelfth school grade and
one year of post high school technical training at an accredited institute, junior college,
college or university in architecture or architectural technology as an educational
minimum.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions
required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as an Architectural Technician II class if required by work assignment.
