GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS SPECIALIST 1
This is geographic information systems (GIS) work at the intermediate level. Employees in this class continue to master the principles, practices and techniques required to design, maintain and produce geospatial data and maps and participate in projects and/or other tasks designed to familiarize them with GIS, Esri’s ArcGIS suite of products and the relational databases. Assignments vary in nature and increase in difficulty as the employee gains experience. Work is performed under the direction of a technical superior with geographic information system knowledge and/or experience.

2. The position must perform the analysis of spatial data to support decision making using Esri’s ArcGIS suite of products or similar GIS software.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Continues to learn to design, maintain, and produce geospatial data and maps utilizing a GIS for the purpose of geospatial planning and analysis work; develops geo spatial databases to produce such data as area land use, zoning, public safety, property, street layout and utilities, as well as specific physical and economic aspects of geographic areas; actively acquires knowledge, abilities and competencies specified for performance at the Geographic Information Systems Specialist 2 level.
Coordinates with departmental GIS personnel in assessing their geospatial data needs; with the assistance of a technical superior, evaluates the feasibility of meeting specific departmental GIS needs and makes recommendations for the optimum means of addressing the department's geospatial data requirements.
Performs first echelon data maintenance to correct system problems; confers with data processing personnel to discuss avenues of improvements to the system; utilizes cartographic and other geospatial reference materials such as maps and related data for use in map production; compiles and updates mapping data; learns to interpret cartographic data to determine land use, elevation, and general relationship of existing physical features.
With limited assistance from a technical superior utilizes and operates Esri’s suite of products and hardware to design, maintain, and produce geospatial data and maps; reviews the adequacy and quality of GIS operations; makes recommendations on specific types of improvements to existing hardware and software.
