STADIUM ENGINEER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is technical and administrative engineering work directing the maintenance and capital programs of a City-
owned stadium complex. The employee in this class directs, through subordinate supervisors, a staff of power plant and
maintenance personnel responsible for overseeing and coordinating the work of city maintenance forces and persons
working under contractual agreement and for acting as Game Duty Supervisor at stadium events. Work is performed
under the direction of the Stadium Director.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)
- The position must direct, through subordinate supervisors, a staff of operations and maintenance personnel
engaged in the maintenance and repair program of a City-owned stadium complex.
- Only one position will be allocated to this class.
- This position must be located in the Recreation Department, Stadium Complex.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Plans, assigns, and reviews through subordinate supervisors the work of a staff of maintenance personnel; plans
and implements a comprehensive program of preventive maintenance for buildings, and equipment for the stadium
complex; conducts inspection tours of buildings, grounds, and machinery to determine that established standards of
maintenance are being followed; utilizes computer system to detect system failure, and equipment malfunction; interacts
with computer system to diagnose system failure and equipment malfunction; troubleshoots failures and malfunctions to
keep system in operation and to effect system recovery; schedules preventive maintenance operations; determines work
priority and assignments for maintenance and operations personnel; initiates contractual agreements for repair and
maintenance services; ascertains that completed work performed by private contractors and city maintenance forces
conforms with accepted standards.
- Evaluates adequacy of services and efficiency of operations through personal observation and conferences with
other stadium officials; works with tenants and lessees to coordinate maintenance and repair work with the regular and
special events carried on in the stadium complex; schedules preventive maintenance and conducts inspections of all
mechanical equipment used in the stadium complex including air conditioners, heaters, boilers, elevators, and escalators.
- Works with private contractors and other city engineers to prepare plans, specifications, and cost estimates for
large scale repair projects to buildings, equipment and machinery as well as enlargements or additions to the capital
facilities; works with architects and engineers to ascertain that requirements of the department and the tenants are
effectively provided for in the planned repair or construction work; inspects the work of outside contractors while in
progress and upon completion to determine adherence to final plans and specifications; acts as a project manager for a
variety of stadium projects.
- Directs the preparation of budgetary estimates for the stadium complex; prepares and submits requests for
materials and supplies; supervises the receipt, distribution, and accounting for all city-owned supplies and equipment used
by city and private forces in the stadium complex as it relates to boiler plant operations; directs the maintenance of all
records relating to power plant, maintenance and supplies, and authorizes the preparation of periodic and special reports.
- Acts as the Event Duty Supervisor at stadium events on a rotating basis; directs stadium staff at stadium events;
responds to emergency situations at stadium events; evaluates emergency situations.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the engineering principles and practices used in the maintenance, major repair, and alteration and operations of
a complex of large public buildings and related facilities, including air conditioners, boilers, large plumbing
systems, high tension electrical systems and other building and stadium facilities.
- the practices and techniques involved in implementing a program of building maintenance and repair, including
the scheduling of work and assigning priorities, estimating size and kind of staff needed, and calculating costs
of time and materials required.
- the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in the maintenance and operations of large, heavily-used
public buildings and related facilities.
- the techniques used to supervise and coordinate the work of a large staff of trades and other personnel engaged
in a large scale comprehensive building operations and maintenance program.
- administrative procedures involving budget, cost estimation and purchasing techniques.
- computer application and program modification as they relate to stadium maintenance and operations activities.
ABILITY TO:
- supervise and determine the adequacy of performance of contractors engaged in maintaining, repairing, and
servicing stadium equipment and facilities through specification surveillance and direct inspections.
- use computers to troubleshoot system failures and equipment malfunctions and to devise methods for repair.
- prepare estimates of labor and material costs and to maintain related records.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, lessees, and the public.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training
and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates
for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 12/95.)
EDUCATION
- Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university with major course work in
mechanical or electrical engineering.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE
- Four years of engineering experience in the construction or maintenance of large buildings.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE
- Three years of engineering experience in charge of the maintenance, repair and physical operations of an arena
or stadium seating at least 15,000 spectators, or a complex of multiple buildings.
Or any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel
Department which has included the specific experience and a bachelor's degree as specified above as an educational
minimum.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
