ELECTRICAL ENGINEER II
Specialties
( Communications )
( General )
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is full performance level electrical engineering work preparing a variety of diagrams, plans,
designs, specifications, and estimates, and inspecting and testing for the construction and installation of
electrical equipment and systems for a variety of public works projects. Employees may conduct field
or office investigations to determine the project's compliance with sound engineering practices, designs,
contract specifications, and established standards, codes and regulations. Work differs from the next
lower class in that assignments received from a superior define the scope of the work to be performed,
but the employee uses independent judgment in planning work details and making technical decisions.
Work is performed under the general supervision of an engineering supervisor.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Both Specialties
- Makes appropriate calculations and prepares electrical engineering designs, drawings,
specifications and estimates affecting a wide variety of moderately complex construction, maintenance
and repair projects; prepares complex contract documents; reviews and checks design calculations,
contractor's shop drawings and engineering drawings; computer cost estimates and material requirements
for a variety of electrical construction and maintenance projects; attends meetings and conferences
concerning various construction projects; conducts complex studies and investigations of various projects
under construction, and prepares comprehensive reports of such investigations.
- Directs the installation of electrical facilities; makes field inspections prior to, during, and upon
completing installation of such equipment, conducts efficiency, acceptance, performance, and other tests.
- Reviews electrical phases of plans and specifications prepared by consulting engineers to
determine accuracy and completeness of plans; confers with contractors and engineers in explaining the
electrical phases of construction projects; interprets plans, specifications, standards, codes and regulations
affecting the electrical phases of the project.
- May give assignments to, advise, and review the work of engineering technicians and engineering
aides and trades personnel engaged in the preparation of designs, plans, and drawings or performing other
assignments involving the installation, operation and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment;
may temporarily advise and review the work of subordinate engineers on a project basis.
- Directs maintenance crews in the inspection, maintenance and repair of lighting systems, power
installations, or building equipment, control and microwave equipment; recommends changes in these
operational systems.
- Prepares progress and a variety of technical reports.
Performs duties described above on the following:
