AIRPORT SUPERINTENDENT I
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is supervisory work directing operations and air field maintenance functions on an assigned
shift for a large municipal airport serving nationwide and international commercial carriers. An employee
in this class represents the airport for all functions in the absence of higher-level airport administrators.
Supervision of a variety of trades and operations personnel and contact with airline personnel,
governmental representatives and others is significant to the work.
Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level superintendent. Assignments
require evaluative thinking and are performed in accordance with standard airport practices and general
work instructions. The employee has controlling responsibility for the operation and maintenance services
on the assigned shift for a large municipal airport.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Assigns and reviews the work of operations and field maintenance personnel; inspects runways,
taxiways and adjacent areas, maintenance shops, storerooms, fixed and mobile equipment and the message
center; determines maintenance needs and the need for operation improvement; writes work orders for
succeeding shifts; implements work orders from prior shifts; inspects work for correctness and
completeness; trains personnel in the use of airport equipment and the performance of airport operations.
- Supervises the inspection and maintenance of runways and taxiways to ensure safe usage; assigns
airport personnel to inspect security areas, fences, gates and doors for unsafe conditions, unauthorized
personnel or security breaches; gather information on unusual and dangerous conditions and assigns
personnel to correct it; reviews reports from safety and security personnel and recommends procedural
improvements to superiors.
- Inspects and reports on work done by private contractors; regulates access to field areas by
private contractors, airline personnel and concessionaires to ensure safe airport operations; assigns snow
removal tasks to field maintenance crews; issues notices to pilots and airline officials describing ground
conditions.
- Gathers information on and reviews requests from subordinate personnel for materials and
supplies; writes and submits requests for materials and supplies; prepares periodic reports on work
completed and in progress.
- Assigns airport field personnel to control vehicle traffic, especially during parking of aircraft;
assigns operations personnel to guide non-scheduled aircraft to designated parking spaces during
emergencies or inclement weather; regulates runway and taxiway traffic and opens and close runways to
use in the event of emergencies; monitors control tower announcements to keep abreast of new arrivals
during such operations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- air field maintenance and operations practices, procedures and techniques.
- the occupational hazards and safety precautions pertaining to all phases of field maintenance and
airport operations.
- the methods used in estimating cost of labor, time and materials necessary for maintenance, and
operation service work.
- supervisory methods and techniques.

- supervise a variety of trades, labor and other personnel in air field maintenance and airport
operations work.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the
minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.
Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience
requirements as approved on 10/79.)
- Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.
- Five years of experience in field maintenance, airport operations, or airport security work, two
years of which shall have been in planning, assigning and reviewing the work of a variety of field and
mechanical trades, airport operations, or airport security personnel.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the
Personnel Department.
NOTE:
Four years of experience patrolling and inspecting landing areas, guiding aircraft to
parking areas, and collecting landing fees may be substituted for the required two years
of supervisory experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as an Airport Superintendent I.
