MAGNETIC MEDIA LIBRARIAN SUPERVISOR
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is supervisory data processing support work maintaining a magnetic data storage media
library. The employee in this class is responsible for supervising a staff of magnetic media librarians in
the completion of assigned tape and cartridge duties within a departmental computer room. The employee
in this class is also responsible for the security of all magnetic tapes and cartridges and software
programs. Work is performed under the supervision of a production control manager.
ALLOCATING FACTORS:
(The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)
- The employee must supervise a staff of magnetic media librarians maintaining a magnetic data
storage media library.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Instructs subordinates in all aspects of library operations; assigns, reviews, and controls work of
subordinate employees; may train new personnel in all aspects of library operations.
- Consults with programmers and analysts to determine data storage media requirements on a daily
basis; assigns subordinate employees to pull and prepare media for use.
- Maintains cataloging information on index cards and software media management system; enters
cataloging information on index cards and software media management system; enters cataloging
information into computer by use of a keyboard to media data entry device; assigns control number and
space in the fireproof security room to each tape and cartridge; catalogs the content and history of each
reel; establishes and maintains cross reference files to permit ease in locating desired information kept
in media library.
- Issues media to personnel within the computer unit upon request; releases media to other units,
departments, and outside agencies when necessary; controls flow of media by frequent reference to files,
records, software program, and weekly media inventory; tracks location of all media; maintains media
in security vaults and in off-site security room.
- Determines number of new tapes and cartridges needed; inspects all new purchases of magnetic
media; tests random sample for compliance with rigid specifications and accepts or rejects tapes and
cartridges.
- Generates inventory lists of tapes and cartridges available; generates production list of jobs in
progress for management information.
- Establishes media maintenance and rehabilitation programs which provide for removal of tapes
and cartridges from circulation; cleans tapes and cartridges to remove wrinkles, puckers, scratches, pock
marks, and other mechanical distortions; tests media on computer and certifier by running special
program and recording all permanent errors; decides whether tape will be returned to active library or
will be discarded with regard to space management.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- cataloging methods and procedures.
- data processing practices and procedures.
- the operation of the CA-DYNAM-T media management system and CA1.
- the proper methods and practices employed in the care and handling of magnetic media.
ABILITY TO:
- ascertain which job tapes and/or cartridges are required from software block diagrams.
- establish and maintain effective magnetic media maintenance and rehabilitation programs.
- supervise effectively.
- establish and maintain effective working relations with associates and members of other city
departments.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.
Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience
requirements as approved on 4/83.)
EDUCATION
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
EXPERIENCE
- Three years experience in the operation of electronic data processing equipment, one year of
which has been gained as a magnetic media librarian.
Or any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
