DATA ENTRY OPERATOR I
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is data entry work of limited scope performing simple alpha-numeric data entry
assignments on a computer terminal. An employee in this class operates a computer terminal
keyboard, increasing their skill in the rapid and accurate keying of coded and uncoded data, off
line key to disc and key to tape and on line data entry directly to the data base of a host
computer. Work includes verifying the accuracy and completeness of such data entries. Work
is distinguished from all other classes by the responsibility for keying data to designated data
fields. Work is performed under the close supervision of a technical superior.
ALLOCATING FACTORS:
(The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)
- The position must perform off line key to disc, key to tape and on line data entry in a
departmental alpha-numeric data entry unit.
- The position must perform routine alpha-numeric data entry tasks, using the keyboard
of a computer terminal device.
- The position must be responsible for keying data to designated data fields displayed on
the computer terminal screen.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Reviews contents of source documents to determine if data is error free before
performing routine alpha-numeric data entry assignments; enters alpha-numeric coded and
uncoded data from source documents; verifies entries for accuracy and completeness; keys data
into the proper program control format and fields.
- Performs simple clerical work, such as maintaining files and completing routine reports.
- Learns the operation of related data entry equipment.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the operation of alpha-numeric data entry equipment.
- general office practices and procedures.
SKILL IN:
- keying and entering alpha-numeric data accurately and rapidly, using a computer terminal
key board.
ABILITY TO:
- perform routine data entry operations rapidly and accurately, using the keyboard of a
computer terminal device.
- read small printed words and numbers rapidly and accurately.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based
on training and experience requirements as approved on 4/91.)
EDUCATION
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
EXPERIENCE:
- Six months experience operating alpha-numeric data entry equipment.
OR
- Completion of a formal training course in the operation of alpha-numeric data entry
equipment at a vocational school or other accredited institution.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable
by the Personnel Department that has included the specific experience described above.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
