PRODUCTION CONTROL COORDINATOR
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is data processing production support work, in a computing environment, coordinating the flow of data systems requests through an automated software scheduler, and returning completed job runs back to the users. Work includes building databases and setting schedules, entering commands into the automated software, and ensuring that the system generates the requested job runs. Resolving processing problems, ensuring the integrity of the stored data on magnetic media, utilization of automation tools, and interfacing with assigned users and systems development staff are significant aspects of the work. Work is performed under the direction of a technical supervisor.

- Employees in this class must be responsible for production support activities in a computing environment.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Coordinates work flow of input and output data from users to the computer room; schedules user requests according to priorities to maximize efficiency and computer resources; adjusts schedule to accommodate special projects, equipment malfunctions, or delays; submits running of jobs at a personal computer, specifying the correct commands and job control language (JCL) in order to execute the jobs properly; monitors job runs in execution.
- Reviews job runs generated by the system; checks for accuracy and completion; analyzes and diagnoses problems with job runs; makes determination for resolution; interfaces with programming staff; makes adjustments to automated software and JCL to avoid job abends and expedite processing.
- Controls use of magnetic media within area of responsibility; ensures integrity of stored data in conjunction with users' data, determines retention period for stored data; performs backups of magnetic media to ensure security of data; prepares produced documents for transport to users; labels and packs output; logs out work produced for delivery to users. May estimate amounts of forms, documents and supplies required for producing job runs; may control issuance and use of all forms, documents, and supplies.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the principles and practices of automated software in a computing operations area
- the principles and uses of JCL and software to set operational standards
- operating system environments, such as MVS
- the procedures and practices of data systems libraries and system automation tools
- the capabilities and uses of system editors
- system commands and error messages displayed on a system console
- internet file transfer protocols
SKILL IN:
- effecting corrections for system amends and making JCL changes
- utilizing automated software systems
- setting up and executing file transfers over the internet to vendors
ABILITY TO:
- prioritize and schedule job runs by automated software for users
- develop and adhere to schedule for processing requests for users
- interface effectively with users and programming staff
- understand and interpret computer operations procedures and to assign appropriate magnetic media to each phase of an operation
- revise and implement operating procedures for more efficient performance
- complete work within determined time schedules
- interface with outside vendors to resolve problems with file transfers
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 10/05.)
EDUCATION
- Completion of an associate's degree program at an accredited college or university which has included major course work in data processing operations, computer science, information science, information systems or a closely related field.
OR
- Completion of a data processing program (with a minimum duration of one year) at an accredited technical or vocational school with major emphasis on a large scale IBM computer environment.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE
- Two years of experience providing user or system support in a data processing operations environment.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE
- Two years of experience in a computing environment in one of the following areas:
- monitoring a computing environment including peripheral equipment for system or network failure, diagnosing such failure and effecting recovery in an operations environment
- paraprofessional applications programming development at the full-performance level
OR
Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department that has included the specific experience described above.
NOTE:
- Successful completion of a bachelor's degree program with major coursework in computer science, information science, information systems, data processing operations, or a closely related field, at an accredited college or university may be substituted for the two years of general experience.
- Comparable City classes which meet the Specific Experience requirements are Computer Operator and Computer Console Operator 2.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of
a position in this class.
