DEPARTMENTAL AIDE

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

          This is routine work in a city department performing a variety of facilitating tasks. 

          Employees in this class perform work which is appropriate for a person with an intellectual or developmental disability.  Work is performed under the close supervision of a higher level worker.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

          Files messenger work and separates sheriff sale notices into city wards and Sheriff Districts.

          Washes glassware and laboratory apparatus and places them in storage areas; cleans laboratory counter tops and other surfaces.

          Operates a commercial dishwashing machine and washes dishes, pots and pan; cleans kitchen area; distributes food to residents and other staff personnel.

          Manually operates automatic elevators; loads and unloads clean and soiled linen carts and separates and folds all mixed linens; lays out and counts all geripads.

          Shelves books in library department; checks books against reserve book lists; searches shelves for overdue titles and works at book return stations sorting books by agency and classification numbers; mends books when necessary.

          Delivers inter-office mail and makes pick-ups from other departments; delivers mail to Post Office and other city buildings.

          Performs copying work and collating; sorts completed copy work for return to originators; prepares re-order list for supplies; answers phones and take message; replaces light bulbs; changes water bottles; collects time sheets.

          Makes routine adjustment to copying machine and calls for machine repair when necessary; enters data via keyboard onto database; codes date for entry via entry via keyboard; verifies data entries.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

•         the work practices and procedures that pertain to the work area to which assigned

 

ABILITY TO:

 

•         learn the use and care of the equipment peculiar to the work assignment

•         learn and observe the safety precautions of the work

•         establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates

•         follow oral and written instructions

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE  (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 3/26.)

 

EDUCATION:

 

          One year receiving on-the-job training in the City's program for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities designed to develop knowledge of work procedures and their application in a municipal department.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

          Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
