CLERK STENOGRAPHER I
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is routine stenographic and clerical work. Clerical duties are beginning level, but
stenographic duties while routine in nature require previous training in stenography.
Work is performed under the close supervision of an administrative or clerical superior.
Assignments are stable in nature and are carried out in accordance with instructions and
established routines.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Takes and transcribes dictation on correspondence, articles, reports, or other materials;
takes dictation from professional personnel requiring limited knowledge of technical terminology
and procedures.
- Composes and types forms and form letters to answer routine inquiries; types a variety
of reports, specifications, tabulations, and similar materials; cuts stencils.
- Checks requisitions, invoices, purchase orders, and other papers and reports for accuracy
and completeness.
- Performs standardized clerical or record keeping work and assists in the preparation of
statistical or other types of reports.
- Files correspondence and other materials.
- Operates office equipment for which no prior training or experience is required such as
adding, postage, check validating and photocopying machines.
- Receives and guides visitors to proper destination; receives, screens and routes telephone
calls; gives out standard department information.
- Receives, sorts, and distributes all mail to proper persons in the office.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- business English, spelling and punctuation.
- office practices, methods, and appliances.
ABILITY TO:
- type from clear copy and to take dictation at a speed level and within accuracy limits
established to determine typing and stenographic skills.
- make arithmetic computations and tabulations rapidly and accurately.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the tenth school grade.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this
class.
