One year ago today George Floyd was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer. His death sparked a movement to reimagine and revolutionize how the residents of the United States are policed. All over the nation, people are changing what police do and how they do it. This movement was a long time coming.

In Philadelphia, the vote to create a new independent Citizen’s Police Oversight Commission will take place on May 27th, and with its creation, the people of Philadelphia will take another step toward the aspirational goals of our founding by making the Police Department by, of, and for, the people of Philadelphia.

George Floyd’s death gave life to this movement. In Philadelphia, we honor him by taking demonstrable action to do better every day.  Today, we showcase what we as Philadelphians have done over the last year and look to the future with the Citizens Police Oversight Commission to cement our commitment to change.
