The overall purpose of the Youth Commission is to give a voice to the Philadelphia’s youth in advising key leadership in the city about polices, programs and actions that affect youth. Through this work, the Commission will be influential in ensuring that decisions that affect young people have been carefully considered and incorporate their concerns and perspectives. The Commission will work to bridge the gap between adults and youth, fostering a greater sense of unity, communication and partnership throughout the city.
The incumbent shall have a deep rooted interest in the welfare of young people and have a commitment to enhance their understanding of the importance of civic engagement and the functions of government. The incumbent shall have knowledge of youth policy issues and community service initiatives in and around the Philadelphia. Knowledge of and/or experience with working with the youth leadership development, youth programs, youth related issues and community service programs in Philadelphia.
About the Philadelphia Youth Commission:
- Assisting the Executive Director in the strategic and operational direction and management for all activities including youth forums, leadership trainings, outreach events, retreats, and workshops
- Developing all newsletters and program materials and the dissemination of public information
- Monitoring and assessing all relevant news coverage relevant to youth
- Maintaining a full roster of active Youth Commissioners
- Attending, when necessary, City Council hearings
- Coordinating outreach efforts to faith based organizations, Phialdelphia public and charter schools, youth development and leadership organizations; and
- Performing related duties and responsibilities as assigned
The incumbent must:
- Work cooperatively in a team oriented environment;
- Be a self starter with the ability to coordinate multiple projects;
- Have the ability to organize complex projects and set work priorities, and ensure the timely completion of all activities
- Have knowledge, and skills in Photoshop, Quark Express, HTML, XML, Acrobat, Flash and Microsoft Office Suite
- Have excellent oral and written communication skills; and
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in Public Affairs, Political Science, Communications, Journalism, or a related area from an accredited university or college, and have at least three to five year’s experience working with youth programs, and/or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Responsibilities:
- Assist Youth Commission staff with administrative duties including but not limited to; answering telephones, making copies, greeting office visitors, preparing materials and media packets, etc.
- Updating the Youth Commission website frequently
- Attend community events, hearings, and meetings pertaining to Philadelphia youth issues (i.e. youth violence, education, health)
- Prepare materials for monthly Youth Commission meetings and researching issues affecting young people
- Monitor Philadelphia youth related issues and communicate them to Youth Commissioners
- Representing Youth Commission staff at community events, meetings, and hearings if necessary
- Assisting Youth Commissioners and staff in the planning and preparation of events, exhibits, activities, and with preparing testimony for City Council hearings
Preferred Qualifications/Experience:
- Must be a Philadelphia resident
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working with youth (ages 12-23)
- Experience with youth organizations, community organizations, and/or government agencies
- Self motivated, outgoing, organized, detail oriented, and skill with time management
- Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends if necessary
- Website design/computer skills (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, HTML, etc.)
Compensation/Internship Duration:
This internship is unpaid, but academic/community service credit will be provided. Interns must commit to working at least 10 hours per week from January 2009 to June 2009 (exact dates will be flexible).
