GUIDANCE DOCUMENT FOR DIOXINS MONITORING REQUIREMENT ISSUED AUGUST 1, 2012.

 

MISSION STATEMENT - Protect the City's freshwater resources and wastewater treatment plants by enforcing local, state and federal regulations governing wastewater discharges to the City's wastewater and stormwater collection systems.


Permits: IWU administers PWD's EPA-mandated Pretreatment Program, regulating industrial wastewater discharges to the City's sewers and wastewater treatment plants.  Additionally, IWU evaluates applications and issues permits for various types of non-routine discharges to the City's sewers.

Surcharge: The surcharge program recovers the costs for treating wastewater that exceeds the characteristics of a normal residential wastewater. The Industrial Waste Unit administers the City's surcharge program by identifying surchargeable customers and sampling their wastewater. 

 

Sewer Rental Factor: The Sewer Rental Factor is a Department-issued adjustment to the sewer portion of a customer's water/sewer bill based on documented evidence of water not returned to the sewer.

Emergency Response: IWU provides 24-hour response to environmental emergencies in cooperation with Police, Fire, and other agencies.

 

PCB Minimization: IWU administers PWD's PCB Pollutant Minimization Plan to identify sources of and reduce the discharge of PCBs to the City's sewer system.
