EarthMate

A Soil Amendment Produced by the Philadelphia Water Department

What is EarthMate?

Philadelphia is a world leader in the production of compost for gardens and lawns.  This compost, which is familiar throughout southeastern Pennsylvania is known as Earthmate and is sold through garden centers and soil dealers.  Homeowners and businesses recognize EarthMate as a unique product for their landscapes, and the Philadelphia Water Department realizes revenue through the sale of EarthMate, which contributes to keeping water and wastewater services affordable for Philadelphians.

How is EarthMate Made?

EarthMate is made from biosolids, the organic by-product of wastewater treatment. Biosolids are mixed with wood chips and composted to produce a rich soil amendment that adds organic material, macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients to existing soil.  The composting process calls for a minimum of 21 days composting.  During that period, temperatures in the compost piles must reach and maintain 131 degrees Fahrenheit for no fewer than three days for complete pathogen kill.   EarthMate is then aged (cured) and screened to produce a clean, safe, odorless growing medium suitable for soil conditioning and as a base ingredient for blends.

Earthmate compost meets all federal and state environmental standards for homeowner use.
