Traffic Engineering Division

The Traffic Engineering Division is responsible for all traffic control devices on surface streets in the City of Philadelphia. This includes approximately 350 miles of State Highway, 2100 miles of city streets, over 2800 signalized intersections, over 3000 all-way stop intersections, and over 15,000 conventional stop intersections. The range of problems stretches from parking concerns on the smallest local street to the safe and efficient movement of over 95,000 vehicles/day on a 12-lane Boulevard with 60 signalized intersections.

The Division has a compliment of 115 employees, four (4) in the Administrative Unit, 27 in engineering, 40 in sign operations and 44 in signal maintenance/construction. In-house pro-active activities of the division include Sign and Signal Preventive Maintenance Program (PM), Intersection Control Conversion Program, and the installation of red Light Emitting Diodes (LED) citywide.

The Sign PM Program is configured to enable twice-a-year inspections. The semi-annual Signal PM Program is designed to address intersections which experience multiple calls for controlled, turnheads, and knockdown problems. The LED installation, to be completed in June 1999, is expected to reduce power consumption by 30%.
