Hazardous Material Has One or More of These Characteristics

Toxicity

  • Potential to migrate in soil and water and accumulate to concentrations that can harm humans, animal life and plant life (mercury, chlordane, DDT, PCB capacitors)

Ignitability

  • Can readily catch fire and sustain combustion (solvent paints, cleaners, gasoline)

Corrosively

  • Acidic or basic (high or low pH level) and can corrode or dissolve metal or other materials (strong acids used in drain cleaners and battery acid)

Reactivity

  • Readily explodes or undergoes a violent reaction when mixed with other materials such as water or is shock sensitive (pool chemicals, chlorine bleach, and break fluid)
