The Sanitation Division is responsible for integrated waste management and street cleaning. The system is designed to be cost-efficient, enviromentally sound, and reflective of the most modern technology. The Division also manages community outreach and educational initiatives that encourage recycling and litter reduction. The Sanitation Division collects and disposes rubbish  and recycling for over 540,000 households. The division also disposes of bulk items, tires, and household hazardous waste. Programs developed through the Sanitation Division include Single Stream Recycling, Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee (PMBC), Recycling Rewards and UnLitter Us. In addition, the division cleans and restores illegal dumpsites.
