VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROGRAMS: (215) 683-3676
Oversees the Peace and Safety Network which promotes positive recreational activities for adolescents and teenagers at selected sites. Additionally, they administer violence prevention programs in cooperation with the Children and Families Cabinet.

Anti Violence Initiative
The Recreation Department, addressing concerns raised by the Mayor's Children and Families Cabinet has been engaged in an initiative to address the issues of Youth Violence. An assessment of the incidents of youth violence, as well as ongoing prevention and recreation programs has been conducted in an area which extends from Broad Street east to the Delaware River, and Spring Garden Street north to Tioga. This area covers part of Recreation Districts 5 & 7, and all of District 6.

We have found that most youth engage in negative behavior and/or become victims of violence between the hours of three and six o'clock. As a response, fifteen after school programs have been started at our facilities. More programs are slated to begin by January. Children attend immediately after school and participate in a variety of programs. The programs vary from center to center and can include: homework assistance, tutoring, sports, games, environmental clubs, visual and performing arts. The funding comes from several sources: the Health and Human Services Development Grant funds the Recreation Specialty Instructors, a donation from Philadelphia Citizens for Children and Youth (PCCY) and the Philadelphia Eagles Youth Partnership funds the fine arts component. Training in Communication and Conflict Management, Meeting Facilitation, Cooperative Games, and Youth Development is funded through the Peace & Safety National Park Service Grant.

As you can see, there are a number of initiatives when put together begin to address the issues of Youth Violence. It is our hope to develop a model which can eventually be replicated throughout the Recreation Department. For additional information, contact Kathi Muller at 215-683-3676.
