Text of Irene Russellīs presentational speech at the Party for the Parks, December 2, 2004:
The City-wide Parks Steering Committee is a representation of neighborhood park leaders from throughout Philadelphia. Over 40 parks groups are active in this committee which has been growing since its inception in 1998.
Together with the Department of Recreation, the Fairmount Park Commission, Philadelphia Green and the Philadelphia Parks Alliance, we share our successes and learnings, generate new ideas, and unite to give a voice to the neighborhood parks which are the anchors for our communities.
Department of Recreation parks like Stinger Square cannot stay safe, clean, and vibrant without a strong commitment from our longstanding partners in the Department. Every year, our partnership with them gets stronger. We thank you for embracing this partnership for parks with us.
For the sixth consecutive year, we would like to recognize and honor a Department of Recreation employee who has gone above and beyond in their commitment to parks and neighborhoods with the Steering Committee Award.
This year, it gives me great pleasure to honor Facetta Garrison-Greene.
Fay, as she is endearingly called, is originally a native of Los Angeles, California, but moved to Philadelphia in 1992. Fay has been working for the City of Philadelphia Department of Recreation since July of 1995 where she began as a Clerk Typist in the Grounds Maintenance Division. Here, she developed an appreciation and commitment to neighborhood parks. Fay has worked with the Parks Project on a number of programs and has been instrumental in organizing maintenance staff and resources at community volunteer service events, especially the Fall for Your Park and Spring into Your Park days. Fay also has played a special role in Special Events. If you got a showmobile this year, you can bet that Fay had something to do with it.
Fay, is seen as inspirational leader in the Department of Recreation. She has risen through the ranks and presently serves as the Executive Secretary for the Deputy Commissioner of Maintenance. Her dedication and support for the maintenance division is evident in her work. She plays a key role in interviewing, training and hiring the seasonal maintenance attendants that staff our parks. In addition, Fay helped develop an extensive training program that has enabled some seasonal maintenance employees to become full time Recreation Facility Caretakers, so that our parks can get the maintenance support they need.
Fay consistently strives to make things better. She has made great strides in her role in the department. Her level of enthusiasm and high energy has helped her rise in her career, and Fay is seen around the office as supporter and nurturer for the Maintenance Division staff.
This role is echoed in the dedication and commitment that she gives to her family. Since 1997, Fay has been the loving and devoted wife of her husband Paul Greene. Together, they raise an adorable son, Andre. They both have been the inspiration to her successes and continue to be the motivation for her future. She continues to strive to be the best at whatever she does as evidenced in her enrollment in Philadelphia Community College where she presently maintains an A average. Facetta is a bright, creative young professional whose best years have yet to come, and we thank and honor her for her commitment to our parks. |
