GENERAL PROGRAM
Carousel House, located at Belmont Avenue and North Concourse Drive, is dedicated to providing socialization, recreational and educational services to persons with disabilities from throughout the City of Philadelphia. It is the first of its kind in the United States sponsored by a municipality. The year-round program is conducted within a 6.4 acre indoor and outdoor complex that includes basketball and tennis courts, picnic area, an accessible garden, an accessible playground and a fitness trail. The state-of-the-art, air-conditioned, indoor facility includes an auditorium, gymnasium, exercise room with weight equipment, arts and crafts room, fully equipped kitchen, game room, first aid station and swimming pool with an adjustable floor.

Participants are referred primarily by associated agencies, social workers, physicians, schools (public and private), hospitals, recreation centers, diagnostic centers, public health services as well as friends and relatives.

Our primary purpose is to provide, through recreation, a program that contributes in a positive way to the mental, physical, social, cultural and emotional growth and development of persons with disabilitie. Some of the activities include swimming (recreational and instructional), music, dance, athletics, arts and crafts, ceramics, summer day camp, martial arts, game room, weight lifting, nature walks, physical fitness, club groups or organizations, forums, discussions, special events and trips to places of interest.

Special events include bingo parties, social dances with disc jockeys, track meets, picnics, holiday celebrations, athletic tournaments, carnivals and the Carousel Ball.

An Advisory Council composed of parents of participants, adult participants and volunteers work closely with the professional staff in developing programs, assisting with special events and coordinating fund raising activities.
