While all major cities offer day camps, swimming pools, and local recreational activities for their children during the summer months, Philadelphia is one of the last major cities in the United States to own its own overnight camp. The camp is approximately one hundred miles away from Philadelphia and is located in the Pocono Mountains. It is set in a secluded 670-acre forest, including two private lakes.
Camp William Penn is managed by the Philadelphia Department of Recreation. It has been in continuous operation for the past fifty-four years.
Many overnight camps charge hundred of dollars for a week's stay. In comparison, the majority of Camp William Penn's expenses are paid for by the City of Philadelphia's tax dollars. The City of Philadelphia subsidizes more than five hundred dollars for every child attending camp. Because of this, the fee for Camp William Penn is small. The fee includes all meals and transportation to and from the camp.
Camp William Penn offers the same activities as much more expensive camps for a fraction of the cost.
Camp William Penn is a true benefit for the children of the City of Philadelphia. |
