CELEBRATE YOUR HERITAGE THROUGH ART 2008 CONTEST

PROGRAM

Recreation participants develop two or three-dimensional artwork relevant to any aspect of their cultural heritage. This could include a drawing of an ancestor or relative or family members or ethnic group engaged an activity specific to your ethnic group, family, neighborhood or region, country of family origin, etc, (i.e. dancing, creating music or some specific craft work, athletic activity, etc.) If you consider your heritage to be your neighborhood and environs then you might draw or paint or sculpt an activity common to your neighborhood. Any kind of artwork is acceptable including drawings, paintings, collage, constructions, prints, sculpture, etc.

PURPOSE

To encourage participants to look within themselves and their heritage to find subject matter for their artwork.

To increase interest in, and knowledge of, personal heritage.

GUIDELINES

Possible subjects could include any family or neighborhood or ethnic activities, events, traditions, portraits of family members, scenes from family or ethnic history, ethnic designs, regional events, etc. Examples might include bocce, stilt-walking, Mummers Parade, stick ball, bas mitzvahs, double-dutch, pi?atas, Los Dias de los Muertos,  etc.                               

All work must be done at a Recreation Department facility.

All work must be relevant to the theme.

Work must be durable. Media such as plasticine and school paste should not be used and cannot be accepted.

All work must be correctly tagged, either typed or in legible hand printing.

Leaders must make sure that each piece has the participant's name, age and facility permanently marked on the back or the bottom of the piece.

Flatwork must be mounted or matted.

Flatwork is limited to a maximum of 16" x 20", including the mat.

Dimensional work is limited to a maximum of 15" wide and 19" high. (Since space for large pieces is limited, we may have to screen entries on a merit basis)

DATES

All entries must be at Fisher Park before 4 PM on September 28, 2008. Judging will take place on October 2nd and work will go on display at 1515 Arch Street, 7th Floor on October 5th.

AWARDS

Certificates will be awarded for the most outstanding works, based on age and media. All entries will receive a Certificate of Participation

EXHIBIT

The best of these works will form a Heritage Exhibit at our Recreation Administration Offices on the 10th floor of 1515 Arch Street.
