The underlying goals of the program are for participants to:

  • Acquire a knowledge of the benefits of physical activity
  • Have ample experience to practice and increase confidence with recognized basic motor skills necessary for this age range, including:

      * Walking and running
      * Jumping, hopping, skipping
      * Climbing
      * Balancing
      * Coordination
      * Throwing and catching

  • To learn age-appropriate nutritional information, with a particular focus on healthy snacking
  • To discuss age-appropriate body image issues
  • To introduce children to the variety of physical activities available in Philadelphia Recreation Centers so that they can continue to develop movement skills even after the camp experience is over

Activities

Children will participate in a synergistic combination of traditional camp activities (i.e., fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, a ropes course, nature studies, campfires, talent show) and targeted physical movement activities, including:

      Low impact aerobics
      Core movements (balance and coordination)
      Strength band conditioning
      Plyometrics
      Stretching
      Body weight resistance exercises

Participants will also be introduced to a series of team sports, including basketball, soccer, baseball, and volleyball.  These activities will emphasize confidence, motor skill development, and the value of participation rather than winning and losing.

Participants will attend a workshop on body image concerns facilitated by a professional in this field.  They will also attend nutrition workshops focused on healthy eating, particularly snacking.
