PLAY STREETS AND SUMMER FOOD PROGRAMS 2008

PLAYSTREETS:
(All information is subject to change)

Dates of Operation: June 23 to August 29, 2008
Days of Operation:  Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m., until 4:00 p.m.

Last year, over 500 city streets were closed off from 10am to 4pm during the summer so that kids would have a safe place to play.  These are called PLAYSTREEETS.

In order to be a playstreet, an application must be filed, with the Department of Recreation no later than May 23rd.

Applications are available from the Recreation Department through April 25th.

The applications require the signatures of at least 75% of the people who live on the block, naming their street a playstreet, and the names and addresses of one or more adult(s) responsible for the supervision of playstreet activities on the block.

Playstreets may receive play equipment and supplies, and daily lunches and breakfasts or snacks from the Department of Recreation Summer Food Service Program.  This is a great opportunity to help Philadelphia be a safer and more fun place for kids to play in the summer.

Please consider getting a playstreet application for your own street.  (Note:  All applications must go through an approval process before  a playstreet permit is issued).

Basic Criteria:

  1. Should not be within 2 blocks of another approved playstreet, playground, or recreation center.
  2. Must be a small, one-way street, no numbered streets, unless it is a dead-end.
  3. 75% of residents on the block must sign the petition agreeing to a playstreet.

For further information, or application for participation in this program, call 215-685-2718 or 2726, Mondays through Fridays ONLY, 10 am until 4 pm, or visit the Martin L. King Recreation Center, 22nd St. & Cecil B. Moore Avenue, Rm. 209, Mondays through Fridays, 10 am until 4 pm.
