STEPS TO ACCESS A RECREATION CENTER

 

INDIVIDUALS

 

 

1. Call or visit the center.

 

During the fall, winter and spring: most centers operate between 2 PM and 10 PM. Some have limited hours on Saturdays.

 


 If an answering machine picks up your phone call, please leave a message. Often, staff members are not in the office; they may be instructing a class, working on the field, attending a meeting or on another assignment. We do not have receptionists or secretaries.

 

2. Ask what type of activities are offered. Be prepared to state your area of interest, i.e. crafts, dance, baseball. Some centers prepare seasonal brochures. (Our website has a complete Database of activities and center intormation.) The facility bulletin board is often a good source of information.

 

Questions to ask include:

 


  • When is the class offered?
  • Is there a fee for the program? Do you take checks or is it money order only?
  • What is the registration procedure?

    3. If an accommodation is necessary for the individual to participate, please offer some suggestions. Tell us what he or she needs. We will then work as a team to provide a reasonable accommodation.

     

    4. If there is a medical or behavioral program, don?t hide it and hope no one will notice. This can create a safety problem not only for the individual, but for other participants as well.
