Recovery Projects

Surface Transportation Formula Funds

Program Name: Surface Transportation Formula Funds
Point of Contact: Clarena Tolson, Streets Commissioner

Program Description

The Streets Department has been awarded $13.7 million of ARRA formula funding as a sub-recipient to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Projects were selected because they meet criteria for investment on federal aid roads and the stringent ready-to-go standards.

Why Apply for this Grant?

Smooth streets are safer for cyclists and pedestrians, more comfortable for transit riders and reduce wear and tear on every kind of vehicle. The money will be invested on repaving streets that are eligible for federal assistance.

Project Objectives

The investment will repave approximately 39 miles or about 390 blocks. The attached map shows where project work will take place in addition to previously scheduled repaving. These projects will restripe miles of worn down bike lanes, bring more than 2,000 curb cuts to current ADA standards, replace outdated street lighting and improve drainage.

Job Creation

The first of three projects was awarded this summer to Tony DePaul and Son. DePaul is headquartered in Blue Bell and has a cement and asphalt plant in North Philadelphia. Reconstruction of curb cuts will begin in October and paving will occur next spring. The second and third project packages will be advertised in October and work is expected to commence in late winter or early spring. All projects have an eight percent PennDOT established goal for DBE participation. Full job creation reports will be available once the project is underway.
